G.hn optimizes the spectrum use on coaxial cabling to achieve superior bandwidth to DOCSIS, even with the high-split approach. G.hn is an ideal fiber extension (see the BBWF TR-419 document for more information about the concept of fiber-to-the-Extension point). It also shares the coaxial cabling with legacy cable TV (CATV) and facilitates a simple and efficient migration to IPTV. The attendee will learn the economics of each approach and will be able to fully appreciate the limitations of the recently popular approach of using a High Split DOCSIS 3.1 method whereby some of the spectrum dedicated to the downstream direction is repurposed to carry upstream traffic. This only provides a minimal upstream gain for the subscribers and does not address the fundamental limitation of how DOCSIS uses spectrum over coaxial cabling. On the other hand, G.hn dynamically allocates upstream and downstream bandwidth over the 5-200 MHz spectrum range and uses OFDM encoding for a more efficient use of the spectrum, ultimately being a better complement/extension to fiber (Active Ethernet or XGSPON/10GEPON) than a typical DOCSIS Hybrid Fiber-Coax (HFC) or even the newer remote PHY or remote PHY-MAC methodology can deliver.
The presentation covers alternatives to deliver Gigabit services over the in-building coax cabling. The attendee will learn about DOCSIS 3.1 High Split approach and about G.hn and the fundamental differences between both approaches to select which technology is best suited to complement greenfield 10 Gigabit XGS-PON or 10GEPON projects to adequately serve brownfield MDUs.
