As an Internet Service Provider (ISP), there are many ways to deploy a broadband network. Choices range from fixed wireless, cable, satellite, and Passive Optical Networks (PON). In reviewing these technologies, considerations such as subscriber density, bandwidth, return on investment and how to utilize current assets all play an important role. PON has become one of the dominating and preferred network topologies being deployed today. We will review how PON technologies have evolved in recent years and why many ISPs have decided to investment in PON to deliver today's communications.
