This seminar will focus on best practice approaches toward planning broadband network resources, with an emphasis on capacity and scaling of the network as demand grows. Included in the discussion is the importance of establishing a baseline, measuring capacity usage over time, estimating new resource demand, and integrating new network resources with minimal to no disruption of services. The discussion will provide real-world examples from a municipal broadband ISP, based on GPON and XGS-PON distribution and access layers, along with some common tools used for monitoring and measuring capacity. The attendees will become more familiar with common challenges in planning for capacity in broadband networks, and take away concepts and strategies to overcome those challenges. Also covered will be a variety of low cost options for improving network capacity in access layers, such as reallocating underutilized resources and introducing traffic shaping policies into the network. Lastly, this seminar will briefly explain many of the common security threats that effect network capacity at various levels of severity, such as those posed by DDoS attacks, BGP hijacking, and other security threats.
